Blog Commenting: Ultimate SEO Guide for Link Builders
Many or all of the links on this page compensate me. Here is a list of our partners and how I make money.
Blog commenting is a powerful way to build backlinks, boost SEO and drive traffic to your websites. It works much slower than most SEO strategies, but will benefit you in the long run as you continue to establish links on important sites in your niche/industry. I’ve been commenting on blogs since 2006 so I have a bunch of experience to share with you. In this guide, you will learn how to leave powerful comments on blogs and boost your SEO & website traffic.
Benefits of Blog Commenting
There are many benefits to blog commenting but I’m going to focus on mainly SEO & traffic benefits in this post. I love blog commenting because I achieve the following goals:
- Establish a Relationship: Every blogger reads their comments. If you want to get someone’s attention, then I recommend leaving blog comments if you can. Not only are you adding content to their website, but it opens the conversation in the future when you send them an email.
- Build Backlinks: Backlinks are the currency of the internet. Many blogs give dofollow backlinks if you leave a genuine comment. I’ll show you how to do this later in this article.
- Drive Traffic: If you write a good comment, you generate traffic from other readers. A long, valuable comment is a great way to show your expertise and drive traffic to your website.
How Blog Commenting Works
Blog comments allow you to interact with the author after reading a blog post. Unfortunately, most bloggers think about blog comment spam when the topic of blog comments comes to mind. Sometimes, popular bloggers must disable comments because of this growing problem. When you write a comment, you must add some value to the conversation. That’s the best way to stand out in such a crowded space.
Whenever you read a blog post, most blogs have a comment section at the bottom of the article. With WordPress blogs, you will see the following fields:
- Name
- Email Address
- Website
Name
This will be the text of your link. If you have a personal blog, I recommend using either your first name or brand name. Using your first name is the most natural way because it looks much less spammy to the blog owner. If you operate in a professional field (health, medicine, finance), then use your full name since it builds more trust.
Email Address
Email address is required by most blogs. If you want a Gravatar to show on your comments, attach one to your email address then keep using the same email. I like to use my main email address unless I don’t want my Gravatar to show up.
Website
If you want to build general backlinks, then link to your homepage. However, if you are commenting on a specific topic like “Weight Loss” then link to a deep page on your website instead. For Example:
- If I commented on a general marketing blog, I would link to http://www.backlinkinsider.com.
- If I commented on a page about WordPress Plugins, I would link to http://www.backlinkinsider.com/wordpress-plugins/
Dofollow vs NoFollow links
Once your comment is live, your link will be tagged either: Dofollow or Nofollow. In order to see what type of backlink you created, highlight any existing comment on the page and right-click to view Page source.
Example of Dofollow Links
Tarik
Example of NoFollow Links
<a href=”http://www.backlinkinsider.com” rel=”external nofollow” class=”url”>Tarik
Dofollow links are the best because search engine bots follow them and give weight to them in their index. While Nofollow links don’t get followed by search engines, you still drive traffic and build a relationship with the blogger. Don’t ignore a highly relevant website based on its Nofollow status.
How to Find Blogs
The simplest way to find blogs is to perform a simple Google search with your keywords. Type one of your important keywords into Google and take a look at the results. Click all the top 10 results and see if you can leave a comment.
DropmyLink
DropmyLink is a great tool for finding blogs to comments on. Here’s how to use this backlinking tool:
- Create an Account with DropmyLink
- Select “Comment Backlinks” as your category
- Choose “Dofollow comments’ or “Commentluv” as your footprint
- Set time to “Past Month”
- Hit “Search”
The problem with blog commenting is that many bloggers close their comments on older articles. I like to find blogs within the last month to comment on. Dofollow comments are the best, but I also think CommentLuv is a good source for backlinks, too. CommentLuv gives you 1 Dofollow link to a recent blog post. If you write articles for long tail keywords, then you have a great way to send backlinks to those pages.
SEOQuake
Another awesome tool is SEOQuake. SEOQuake is a Firefox plugin that provides SEO information for your Google Search results. It will help you find niche blogs as well.
Organize Your Blogs
I use Feedly to keep track of my favorite blogs. Subscribe to a blog’s RSS Feed then add it to Feedly. From the Feedly dashboard, you can track updates on all the blogs you comment on.
How to Write Comments
Add Value
It’s funny how people still leave generic comments when the article specifies on ADDING VALUE to the comments. If you want your comments to be notices you have to add something to it that others can learn from.
Ask a Question
If you cannot think of something valuable to add, then simply ask the author a question about the article. Most bloggers read and respond to reader questions. Ask them a question and you’ll get a reply along with a link to your website.

Frequently Asked Questions about Blog Commenting
What if the site doesn’t allow comments?
Blog commenting doesn’t work on sites that disable comments.
What if I don’t have time to leave blog comments?
Outsource your blog commenting strategy. Use Fiverr or Elance to find a blog commenting link builder.
Where can I find other cell phone blogs that have back links to them?
Gather a list of cell phone blogs using Google then check their backlinks using MajesticSEO or OpenSiteExplorer.
How is a link better if you write a solid post vs. just a quick post with a link? It seems to me that this is a time issue and faster would be better, no?
Both comments will get a backlink but the solid comment drives traffic too. I’ve driven up to 50 visitors per day with valuable comments. That’s an extra 1,500 uniques per month with just 5 minutes of work!
I was commenting blog post as same theme but now i did not get any improvement in my site…
Check to make sure your backlinks are dofollow. Only Dofollow links help your SEO and boost rankings.
Can you give us a specific method of making a comment backlinks without the owner counting it as spam
Ask a question related to the article. If you have more time, write a twisted comment to adds value to the conversation.
Can i left website’s url in comment space so users can go directly on it, may be that website don’t belong to that blog?
No. URLS in the website field will trigger the spam filter. Spam comments get deleted. I wouldn’t recommend that strategy.
Do you find your blogs via Google Blogsearch (or similar) and then manually save the RSS feed in reader?
Yes. Find blogs using Google then save them with Feedly.
When you comment, is it only the URL or ‘website field’ that creates the backlink? OR does typing in the URL on the comment text itself produce a backlink?
Both methods create a backlink.
Where can i find a dofollow blog list?
Try this list: http://www.justwebworld.com/high-pr-dofollow-blog-commenting-sites-list/
How long does it take for these backlinks to show up for Google?
It depends on how often the website gets indexed. It usually takes 2 to 3 days for the backlinks to show up on Ahrefs.
Is it your belief that blog commenting is currently not providing much boost for keywords ranking higher?
No. I have ranked websites using only blog comments. It’s one of the best strategies if you do it properly.
Can you recommend any software to help keep track of blogs you have posted to and if the comment has been accepted?
I’m reviewing a bunch of software and will let you know.
Please provide some insight on the approximate number of comments you post in other blogs daily.
I leave up to 5 comments per day across a variety of blogs. I want to increase this number in the future.

Hi Kota,
Thanks for your comment. I would focus on Facebook pages to drive social media traffic. People love talking about celebrity news so try to get people tweeting, liking, and Google+ your articles and pictures. Also, use Pinterest to pin your photos from every post. Grab a Pinterest Plugin and allow people to pin your photos. Facebook and Pinterest will send you a lot of traffic. I will write a complete article on this in the future.

CBSE question papers
Thanks for this post. I just checked out DropLink and it looks like an awesome tool. Have been using it already and have added 20 links to related blogs in a few hours. That was a great tip to link from the comment deep into my content. I never thought to do that!
Thanks for great article.
I have studied a bunch of experiments that show nofollow links have seo value in google. So for example your keyword is “great keyword” and you have brand new site or page, and get ONLY nofollow links(no dofollow links at all) with anchor text “great keyword”.
So your rankings of “great keyword” word will increase in google SERP.
May be it counts only if somebody clicks that links (nofollow links) and go to your site/page.
So i think google lies to us about nofollow links)
And for sure youtube and wikipedia nofollow links works for seo, wikipedia and youtube has great amout of traffic, so if link is relevant then people will click to it.
Would like to know what do you think about counting nofollow links by google.
Sorry for my english)

Hi Tarik,
First, nice to see you’re a Chelsea fan, my closet rival – am an Arsenal Fan.
You provided a bunch of handful useful tips on blog commenting for seo purposes; lots of takeaways reading your post.
However, I want to add to your list of tools that makes finding relevant target blogs that add SEO value to comment links possible – Mozbar.
Mozbar is such a great SEO tool I never browse the net without, it let you quickly analyze the important SEO metrics of any web page at a glance. This saves time and efforts leaving comments on pages that may not add much SEO value to your comment links.
I would like to see if you’ve answered this question on your blog and the link if possible,
“have you find any software to help track blogs you’ve left comment and when the comments get approved’?
Thanks, waiting for your kind reply.
Very nice article and very useful information you shared about blog commenting seo. it is easy but it has a problem about approval.
The niche of blog commenting has too many times been tarnished with gsa and scrapebox tactics spamming 100k comments a day HOWEVER there is still a huge gap in the marketplace of SEO for blog commenting and i have recently written an advanced guide to blog commenting for SEO 2016. http://www.fatrank.com/seo-2016-blog-commenting-advanced-guide/ have a read of it and see what you think? Would love your thoughts on it and if there is anything anyone can add to it then i will gladly include this in and credit the source.
I have seen first hand on 3 of my large affiliate sites the blog commenting has made a massive difference. It offers link diversity and drives traffic so just for them reasons alone its well worth doing but in my blog i name many other reasons why blog commenting is amazing for your websites and blogging platforms in SEO 2016.
Thanks for the sharing this quite impressive post.

Great information! I was clueless on these social media marketing tools! Thanks for the update!
Great post. Now we can get backlinks by commenting on others blogs, this is really easy and awesome. You made it really easy to understand this. I loved your blog and I’m definitely gonna bookmark your blog.
Thank you 🙂
Blog comment is an effective way to improve your site ranking thru SEO-link building.Yes really this blog commenting sites list is very helpful to me and also all new visitor of this website. I can go to any website by a single click from your blog. Thanks for sharing this kind of helpful article.
Thanks for posting this interesting article. Really it’s working and help me a lot in building quality backlink for my website.
Nice article, one should also be aware that keyword questions are becoming more important. Keyword questions are being driven by the uptake in search driven by voice on Siri and Cortina. With voice search people ask questions rather than look for keywords so as an example rather than type Plumber London they will say find me a plumber near me in Westminster to fix my boiler.
The difference being voice uses natural language questions and this optimisation needs to be done for this type of question.
Thanks for a great post. One addition is that if when doing blog comments, you make sure the keyword you are targeting is in the url of the post you are commenting on this greatly adds power to your inbound links. It increases relevance.
Really Nice Post Thanks for sharing very use ful
